Black and tan leopard print spots tattooed on the side of a person's ribs, with one arm raised beside the torso.

Leopard print spots on the side ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo is a cluster of irregular leopard print spots, each a solid black outline with a tan or orange-brown fill, arranged in a diagonal column down the side of the ribcage. The shapes are filled rather than shaded, with clean edges and no visible linework detail. The photograph is taken from the side against a plain indoor background, with a black garment visible beside the skin.

Dear Marnie, I know you said you'd be too grand for the reunion, but the hall still smells of Dettol and floor polish, and Mr Garrity had his name badge on upside down again. You will not believe who turned up in a leopard print coat. It was Clare Hollis, the one who made us all sit on the radiator in Year Nine for a dare. She swears it's the same coat her mum wore to the Christmas dance in 1979, and that it has since been to Benidorm, two funerals and a divorce.

We ended up in the car park with our shoes in our hands, comparing bunions. She turned the collar over and showed me a faded tag inside: Pauline, Leisure Centre Bingo, Tuesdays. Clare said the spots weren't really spots at all, just the places where the cat's fur had worn thin and the streetlamps had got in. I told her that was rubbish, and she agreed it was, and we laughed until a man from the cricket club asked if we needed a lift.

He drove us home in his Volvo, which smelt of wet dog and sweet wrappers. Halfway down Ashfield Road, Clare took the coat off and pressed it into my lap. Every decent thing I've owned, she said, has been somebody else's first. I didn't argue. I put it on in the driveway, and when Dad came out to see who was honking, he stood there with the milk and looked at me as if I'd stepped out of a documentary.

Come for tea at the weekend and I'll show you. Bring the terrible hat. Love, Jan
