Halloween flash sheet: cat, skull, bat and owl
Traditional · Colour · Flash
This flash sheet shows four separate designs arranged in a grid on a black background: a cat face with sparkles, a skull with a diamond and lightning bolts on the forehead and sunburst rays, a bat with outstretched wings under a spiderweb, and an owl with stars above a crescent moon. The linework is bold and even, with shading built from parallel strokes and simple flat fills. The palette uses orange and yellow on black, giving the sheet a retro Halloween feel.

The cat on the Hallowe'en sign has been your job since October. Mrs Dunne handed you the tin of orange paint and a brush with split bristles and said the children would only come to the Welfare hall if the cat grinned. You have repainted its whiskers four times. Tonight the wind keeps tearing the paper stars off the windows, and the grin looks less like a joke than a warning.

Down at the colliery gates, Tommy Rhys is holding a jam jar with a glow-worm in it, swearing he can see the owl's eyes from the lamp room. Above the winding wheel a bat flaps through the arc light, and somebody shouts that it's a sign, the way somebody always does. You tell him bats only come for the moths. He says the moths are the men's lamps, and goes quiet.
The shift bell rings at nine, early, because the overman wants the night crew underground before the fog comes off the river. Nobody moves. Then the owl on the wall turns its head, slow as a clock hand, and the whole village looks up. On the lintel of the lamp room someone has chalked a diamond and two bolts of lightning above a grinning skull, the marks old Deputy Hale used to scratch beside the safe seams.
You go down with them anyway, because the cat is your work and the work is yours to finish. At the cage you press the bell twice and the iron drops. The last thing you see before the dark closes over is the owl, wings spread against the moon above the headframe, keeping its own count of who went down and who came back up.
