Cat skull with glowing green eyes

Colour · Flash

A cartoon-style drawing of a cat skull in profile, showing an open jaw with pointed teeth, a single ear and two large green eyes with white highlights. The bold black linework and cross-hatched shading sit on a flat tan fill, with green used for the eyes and a soft glowing outline against a black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been night porter at Hollin Cross for eleven winters, and for most of them the skull in the lost property cabinet has kept to itself. Tonight the drawer stands open a finger's width, and a thin green light leaks across the timetable pinned beside it. You lean closer. The cat's eyes are switched on, bright as a signal lamp, and her jaw hangs open with its pointed teeth catching the glow from the platform.

Mr Ashby, the stationmaster before you, told you the cat was called Pilot. She rode the 6:10 for nine years, sitting in the guard's van as if she held a ticket, and when the branch line closed in 1963 she was found on the signal box steps, dead and perfectly upright. Ashby kept her head because the clerks said binning her was bad luck. You thought that was just a story for the new porter until the drawer started rattling on its runners.

The 00:40 freight is due in four minutes, and you know what she wants. You take the brass hand lamp from its hook, the one with the cracked lens, and hold it up to the empty track the way Ashby showed you. Far down the line a red spark blinks and steadies. The freight slows at the crossing, the driver leans from his cab and lifts two fingers to the platform, and the cat's eyes dim to nothing.

By six the drawer is shut. On the timetable someone has ringed the 6:10 in green crayon, and beneath it, in careful capitals, is a single word: PILOT.
