Halloween sleeve design with pumpkins and skull

Mixed · Flash

A tall sleeve-style flash drawing with a Halloween theme. Pumpkins, a skull and crossbones, a spiral moon, bare trees and a graveyard are shaded in black and grey with fine detail. Orange, green, yellow and pink accents on the pumpkins, a green character and lollipops add colour to the composition.

The castle had been empty since the bell rope rotted, and the lollipop man arrived on the night the moon went crooked. You had been sent up the hill with a lantern and a list, because the village wanted its candles back and its sweets back, and nobody else would climb past the graveyard gate after dark.

Pumpkins lined the broken stair, grinning at you with their candle stubs guttering. Each one had been carved by someone who died before the roof fell in, and each had worn the same expression for a hundred years. At the top, in the old solar where the window gave onto a sky stuck with a spiral moon, a green creature sat on a heap of wrapped sweets, sewing a button onto a sack bigger than the room.

"You're late for the tithe," it said, not looking up. "Everyone's late. The bones are always late."

You held out the list. It licked its needle, licked the thread, and read it aloud in a voice like a sherbet cough. Then it reached into the sack, pulled out a pink lollipop as wide as a cartwheel, and pressed it into your hand. The weight of it was the weight of every name on the list.

Walking back down past the skull painted on the gatepost, you understood the price. The village would have its candles. You would keep the spiral moon, and the moon would keep you, rolling slowly over the castle walls for the rest of your life, a sweet you could never quite finish.
