Dear Aunt Hester,

The bats have got into the parish hall again, and Mrs Pennington has declared them my responsibility, which I suppose is fair, since I was the one who taught them to sing the hymns backwards. The autumn fair opens on Thursday. Every stall is hung with spiderweb and trick or treat cards, and the pumpkin boy from the bakery has promised to carve a face that doesn't look so cross this year.
Papa says the snow globe on the cake table is to stay sealed until the bunting comes down, because last time the little town inside it fogged up and the church bell rang out of tune for a week. I have not touched it. I have only looked at it very hard, which Papa says is the same thing with better manners.
The coffin is the real trouble. The bride who lives in it keeps climbing out to borrow the sugar and then forgetting to climb back in, and yesterday she sat on the skull by the pond for an hour, eating candy corn and telling the ghost his sheet was on crooked. Nobody could make her go home until I offered her the last cupcake, the green one with the purple frosting, and she shook my hand and said I was the only sensible girl in the county.
Come on Thursday and bring your good hat. I have saved you a seat beside the eyeball from the raffle, who has very strong opinions about the moon.
Your loving niece, Mab
