A witch in a pointed hat stands in front of a haunted house under a moonlit sky, holding a glowing jack-o-lantern. Two green zombies with skull faces stand beside her, and a row of lit candles sits in a graveyard at the lower right. A hooded grim reaper figure and a devil with red eyes appear at the left, with bare trees above.

That year the Hallows girl came up from the mill cottages with a pumpkin carved into a grin and a borrowed hat too tall for her. She wanted to see the house on the hill with the crooked gables, the one everyone said had stood empty since the fever. Her brother had dared her. He was not there to say so, having run home at the first bell.

The two green boys were waiting by the gate, skull-faced and patient. They took her lantern without a word and led her along the candles. Behind the yews a red-eyed shape was counting the flames under its breath, and the hooded one at the stile lifted a bony hand, as if to say the count was nearly done and she had better hurry.

Mrs Pettifer found the pumpkin on her step at dawn, still lit, and the thirteenth candle burned down to nothing. The girl was back in her own bed by breakfast, humming a tune nobody in the cottages knew. When the children asked where she had been, she only smiled and said the path was longer on the other side.
