Jack and Sally under a moon on a back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows Jack Skellington and Sally holding hands in a graveyard, with carved pumpkins, leaning headstones, a ghost and bats silhouetted against a large orange moon. The figures have bold dark outlines and smooth cartoon-like shading, and the spiral hill from the film curves through the moon. Warm oranges and yellows dominate the background, with purple and grey tones in the sky and the characters' clothing, and the design fills the whole of the upper back.

The last train into Hollowmere leaves at eleven, and on the last night of October you are the only one left on the platform to watch it go. The clock above the waiting room has stopped at a quarter past something, and the lamps hum the way they do before rain. You have a ticket for the morning service. You have no intention of boarding anything tonight.

Then a tall figure in a pinstriped coat comes up the steps two at a time, his skull tilted as if he is listening for a tune nobody else can hear. Behind him a girl with red hair pinned up in a ribbon of thread drags a suitcase that clacks over every seam in the tiles. She carries a rag doll stitched from old sheets. "You're the stationmaster," he says, not asking. "We need a train that goes the long way round the hill."
You tell him the timetable has no such line. He opens a leather notebook full of crooked handwriting and taps a page where someone has drawn a spiral, a town, and a huge orange moon sliced by the edge of the paper. Beyond the platform, the bats are already gathering over the signal gantry, and the pumpkins on the bench have started to grin in their own small way. The girl sets her case down and looks at you the way people look at a clock that is running wrong.
You stamp the form because stamping forms is what you do. The train that arrives is painted the colour of marmalade and has no driver, only a pair of hands on the front window, folded as if in prayer. As it pulls away, the girl lifts one stitched hand from the glass and waves. In the morning there is a carved pumpkin on the bench with your name cut into its side, and the moon, very faintly, is still rising over the hill.
