Hamsa hand and lotus design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A hand-drawn design of a hamsa hand with a lotus flower centred in its palm, surrounded by ornamental scrollwork and a row of dots. The linework is fine and even, built from outlines and small decorative motifs with no shading. The design is drawn in purple ink on textured paper and fills most of the frame, with a few dots trailing off the lower right corner.

The third sheet sat under the lamp in the back room above the print shop, and he still was not happy with the middle. Every petal came out too neat, the sort of flower a shop stamps on a tin.

He tried again on Sunday with the window cracked for the smell of the tram oil. The purple ink was the cheap kind the print shop used for ledgers, and it bled into the grain of the pad paper so each line spread a little, like breath on glass. He stopped fussing with the petals and let the scrollwork take the weight, curling it round the lotus until the flower seemed to be sitting in a cupped pair of hands rather than drawn on a palm at all.
She came up the stairs at six with her son's coat over her arm, wanting it finished before the Lagos boat. She held the sheet to the light and said nothing for a long time. Then she tapped the row of dots and asked why they ran off the corner.
He said the pen had been running dry by then. She shook her head and told him to leave them exactly as they were, because that was the road the boy would take out of the frame, and she wanted it to look like a road.
