Hamsa hand and lotus on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The design shows a hamsa hand with a blue eye at its centre, sitting above a stylised lotus flower with curling tendrils and small dots. The hand and scrolls are drawn in black outline with fine decorative swirls, while the lotus petals are filled with pink, magenta and purple shading. The tattoo is photographed against a plain blue background, with the limb filling the frame.

The mule would not cross the dry wash until the woman tied a blue glass eye to its bridle, so the caravan sat in the shade of the tamarisk and waited while the sun walked a hand's width across the sky. Nobody argued. Everyone had learnt that Ruma's superstitions were cheaper than a lost animal.

She had carried salt from the white pans to the market towns for thirty years, long enough to know the road bred its own trouble. Men quarrelled over water. Skins split and went foul. A hot wind off the escarpment could carry something into a sleeper's ear and leave him muttering for a week. Her grandmother had painted an open palm on the door of every wagon the family owned, with an eye set in its centre, to turn away whatever looked too long at them.

When the mule finally stepped down into the wash, the stones rang under its hooves like a struck pan. Ruma did not look back at the others. She was watching the far bank, where the rain of the spring before had left a green seam of mud and, rising from it, a single lotus, its petals the pink of a sunset held too long. Nobody in the caravan had seen one so far from the well. Her grandmother used to say lotuses only opened where something had been kept safe.

She tugged the bridle and the blue eye swung against the mule's cheek. On the far side she stopped, unslung her water skin, and poured a cupful onto the mud for the flower. Then she led the animal up the slope toward the salt towns, and behind her the lotus turned its head slowly after her, the way a watchful thing does when it has decided to stay.
