Colourful mandala tattoo on an ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A large mandala sits on the ankle and lower leg, built from layered petal shapes around a central circle. The linework is bold and dark, with a dotted pattern and shading inside the petals. Purple, pink, teal, yellow and blue ink fill the design against pale skin and a white bedsheet.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the spilt lemonade. You want the tale of the Marigold Hall piano, or you want to dance? Good. Then listen, because I'll not tell it twice.

Nineteen twenty-six, the hall on Cliff Street had a floor waxed so hard you could see your own reflection in it, and a drummer called Ezra Pell who kept time with a clock he'd won at cards. Every Saturday a woman came in alone, took the far table and drew on the backs of bus tickets. Circles, always circles, each wrapped in petals, and each petal a colour she'd mixed from whatever the landlord kept in his cellar: plum from the port, teal from the copper scrubbing water, yellow from the custard powder the cook let her borrow.
One night the fiddler snapped a string and the room went quiet. In that quiet she stood up, walked to the middle of the floor and laid a ticket down on the boards. It was a mandala the size of a cartwheel, all dots and rings, and the dancers stepped round it without thinking, the way water goes round a stone. Nobody could say afterwards whether the lamps dimmed. Ezra swore his clock stopped dead. The fiddler found his string, the music started again, and the drawing stayed where it lay until the cleaner swept it into the bin with the crisp packets.
But the cleaner kept it, folded small in her apron pocket, and she passed it down to her granddaughter, who passed it to me. Hold it up to the lamp and you'll see the petals are still wet.
