Hamsa hand with eye and flowers on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A hamsa hand sits at the centre of the design, filled with blue and teal flowers, pink lotus blossoms and green leaves. A large blue eye with a pink lotus behind it forms the base of the hand, all framed by bold black outlines and dotted scalloped borders. The colour is saturated and flat, with yellow and orange highlights, set against bare skin on the outer thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The palace clerks wanted the hand painted over the gate in plain ochre, but my aunt Ysolde had never painted anything plain in her life. She ground mussel shell and lapis into a teal that made the stableboys stop whistling, and when the lamp-lighters came round at dusk she was already up the ladder with her brushes between her teeth.

Every door in Calder Vale had a hand on it, five fingers spread to turn back the wrong kind of looking. Ysolde filled the fingers with flowers so the envy would get lost among the petals. She put lotus at the wrist and scallops around the edge like lace on a christening shawl. At the heart of it all she painted an eye, and the eye was the only thing she would not let me touch.

The winter the river froze, the Duke's steward came with a purse and a complaint. The eye, he said, was watching his wife. Ysolde wiped her hands on her apron and asked him whether he had ever been looked at by something that loved him. He could not think what to say, so he went away and left the purse on the step.

She died in the thaw. I finished the gate the following spring, and when I came to the eye my hands would not make it shut. I gave it lashes the way she had, a fine black fringe, and left the pupil wide open. Each evening I still climb the ladder, and each evening the lamp-lighters look up and find something looking back.
