Harriet had spent eleven winters pricking copper with a steel point, and her eyes had learnt to see a plate as a field of dots before they saw anything else. The walled garden behind the print shop in Norwich was where she went when the light was good, and it was there that Mr Abel brought her the commission: a seal for a merchant who wanted his import papers stamped with a hand that would keep off the wrong sort of luck.

She drew it three times before the ink satisfied her. The palm would be bold on the outside, one unbroken line the printers could not smudge, but inside she let the stipple thicken and thin like frost on a pane, one lozenge nested in another until the fingers became a lattice of small suns. Beneath the wrist, where a lesser engraver would have put a flourish, she set three dots in a column, each one a little deeper than the last.

Mr Abel asked what the dots meant. She said they were the three hours a stipple engraver can work before her hand starts to lie to her. He laughed, but the merchant's clerk, a thin boy with ink on his cuffs, looked at the dots for a long time.

When the seals came back from the press, the clerk, who had been ordered to check every sheet, found a fourth dot in the margin of the last page, pale and perfect, that nobody had put there. Harriet never admitted to it. She only pinned the proof above her bench, where the hand kept watch over a garden full of sparrows.
