Brother Wendel kept the bees at Saint Odo's, on the hill above the river where winter came early. Each autumn he cut a single comb from the hive nearest the wall and carried it down to the village in a box lined with cloth, because the miller's wife was wasting slowly and only that honey would stay down her throat.

The abbot did not like it. He said a monk who gave away the honey gave away the hive, and the hive had stood there longer than the abbey. So one year he locked the apiary gate and set a boy named Tobin to watch it. Tobin could not keep his eyes open past dusk, so Wendel took the honey anyway, through the gap under the wall where the stones had shifted.

On the last night of the frost, Tobin woke to find the gate open and the hives gone quiet. He followed a trail of wax crumbs down the hill and found Wendel kneeling by the river, pressing a comb flat between two smooth stones. "It has to be shaped," Wendel said, "or it won't hold the cold." He had cut the wax into a heart, then into little facets like a stone from the river bed, so the lamplight would run through the cells and keep working after dark. Tobin asked why a heart. Wendel said the miller's wife had asked him the same thing.

In the morning the miller's wife was sitting up in bed, holding the small wax heart to the window. The abbot, sent down to scold, stayed to eat her bread. Wendel kept the gate unlocked after that, and the bees never once swarmed the village.
