Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated figure seen from behind sits within overlapping circles and a pointed geometric frame, with stacked circles running up the spine. A dotwork lotus flower sits beneath the figure, and a thin vertical line extends down from the frame. The design is rendered in black ink and grey stipple shading on a forearm against a plain light background.

The lock-keeper's daughter had sat on the gunwale of the Mary Ann since the ice went out, and nobody could shift her. Her father tried bread, then shouting, then a bargee's rope, which he tied to her ankle and then thought better of. She sat with her back to the water, legs folded, palms open on her knees, looking at nothing the way a heron does.

Old Hester Vane, who had worked the canal forty years, said the girl was waiting for the lotus. There was a pond in the cut below Weir Lock, she said, and a flower in it that opened only once in a lifetime, and only for someone who had stopped moving long enough to be noticed. Hester counted the lock gates for them on her fingers, seven of them, stacked one above another like coins on a string, and told them the girl would know when the seventh opened.
The bargemen went down through the locks without her. They cursed, then they worked, then they forgot to curse. Every morning the father rowed out to check on her and every morning she was still there, dew on her hair, the water flat and silver around the hull. On the eighth morning the pond below the weir was full of pale petals, and the girl stood up without a word and took the tiller.
Her father sat down on the gunwale where she had been, folded his legs, and did not move again until the boat had reached the sea.
