Hamsa hand with evil eye on the neck
Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small hamsa hand sits centrally on the back of the neck, outlined in black with ornate filigree and scroll detailing across the palm and fingers. A blue eye at the centre of the palm is the only colour in the design. The tattoo is framed by dark hair above and a thin chain necklace below, with the rest of the image in soft, warm-toned light.

Costas had hung the brass hand above the galley hatch the week the fryer caught fire, and nobody on the Anemi had asked him why. Ruth, the Dutch deckhand, asked anyway, and he told her it was for the eye, not the hand. The eye was a blue glass bead the size of a sultana, wired into the filigree at the centre of the palm, and he had bought it from a shop by the Piraeus fish market for the price of two packets of cigarettes.

Through the night crossing the swell ran long and the pans slid along the rails. Costas counted onions by feel and chased a burnt tray of spanakopita into the bin, muttering in the dialect of his mother's village. Ruth sat on an upturned crate peeling potatoes with a knife she kept sharp against his orders. When the engine note changed as they rounded the headland, the lights of Mavri showed low and yellow across the water, and the gulls woke up all at once on the harbour wall.
He had meant to take the hand down before mooring, the way he always meant to fix the extractor fan. But the captain came down for coffee, saw the bead catching the stove light, and said nothing about it. Instead he asked whether the pastry would hold for the morning run to the far islands.
When the captain had gone, Costas lifted the hand from its nail, turned it so the blue eye faced the porthole, and hung it back up. "It has done its job," he said, meaning the fryer, meaning the crossing, and Ruth did not ask which one he meant.
