Patterned rabbit on the thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A rabbit in profile, sitting upright, is outlined in solid black linework and filled with ornamental patterns, including scalloped arcs, radiating lines and rows of dots. The shading is solid black with no greys, and the uncoloured skin shows through the open areas. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin, with yellow fabric and a dark background at the edges.

The thaw had not come to Harrowby Fold by the second week of February, and Ada Penrose was walking the top field with a bucket of mash when she found the hare sitting in the furrow as neat as a thing set down on a shelf.

It did not run. Its back was patterned with rings of rime, scallops like the lace on her mother's collar, and a row of dark dots down the flank where the frost had not settled. Her grandmother had said that a hare which sits still in winter is keeping an account, and that anyone who stares it out will be asked to pay. Ada stared it out for the length of a breath, then said, "Show me, then," because there was nobody else in the field to say it to.
The hare rose and went along the hedge without hurry, stopping each time she fell behind. It led her past the drowned ditch and the sheep fold to the old boundary stone, where the snow had melted in a ring and the grass beneath was green. Under the stone lay a tin box with her father's name scratched on the lid, and inside it the paper he had signed for the hay the year the rains came early. The debt had never been paid. It had never been called either, which was worse.
She sat on the cold stone with the paper in her lap until the light went orange over the ridge. When she looked up the hare was gone, and in the furrow where it had sat, a single shoot of green was pushing through. Ada tore the paper in half, then in quarters, and carried the pieces home in her coat pocket like seed.
