Hamsa hand with eye and lotus on chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A hamsa hand sits at the centre of the image, with a stylised eye and lotus flower in its palm and an om symbol and stacked triangles running down the middle finger. Dotted patterns and curled swirls fill the fingers and sides of the hand, with a small triangle and three dots hanging below the lotus. The linework is bold and the shading is soft grey, with no colour ink, set against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass hand has hung above the scullery door since long before you signed the lease, its fingers polished pale where a century of wet coats has brushed past. Mrs Pargeter never explained it. She said only that the eye in the palm was there to keep an eye on the weather, then moved to Bexhill with the ledger, a tin of spare keys and a warning about the boiler.

On the third night of October the wind comes off the harbour sideways, and the lodger in Room Four knocks at two in the morning asking for a candle. He is a quiet man with a sailor's cap and a week paid in advance. You give him a torch and the boathouse key instead, because it seems the wrong night to argue with someone who wants to be out in the dark. He says the sea is talking tonight, and you find you believe him.

At dawn the bed in Room Four is made tight as a drum. On the pillow lies a folded tide table with three dots pencilled in the margin and a note in square capitals: THE HOUSE HELD. The boat is still moored at the slipway, its oars lashed neatly inside, and nobody in town has seen him since.

You climb to the scullery with a cloth and a bucket of vinegar and rub the salt from the brass palm, working around the little stacked triangles and the curled swirls until the lotus beneath the eye shines. The eye looks back at you, steady and unbothered. Then you go down to put the kettle on for the next guest.
