Ornate hamsa hand on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A hamsa hand sits on the side of the ribs, with the fingers and palm filled with leaf and vine motifs, mandala-style ornaments and an eye at the centre. The design uses fine, even black linework with areas of dense solid black and stippled detail. It is entirely black ink on skin, and the composition is centred on the ribcage with a green top and light denim visible at the edges.

Hessa worked the fine nib of the pen the way other women hemmed a dress, slowly and without looking up. By the time the ink reached the palm, the market outside had shut its shutters against the dust, and only the lamp over the stall still burned. Samira held the card steady and counted the leaves as they came: seven on each finger, then vines curling down the sides as if someone had started a sentence and never finished it.

The customer was a driver who crossed the salt flats twice a week, a man with a cracked radiator and a daughter in another town. He had asked for protection without saying from what, and Hessa did not ask. She filled the dense centre with stippled dots until the ornament looked like lace, then set the pen down and waited for the wet black to settle.

"Draw the eye," she said. Samira's hand shook. "It is not for the one who carries it," Hessa said. "It is for the road. Whoever comes toward him will see it first and decide to slow down." The eye was small, a neat almond with a dark iris, and when Samira finished it the lamp guttered and the whole palm seemed to lean toward the window.

In the morning the driver came back with the card folded in his shirt pocket. He had not needed it for the wedding he was driving to, he said, but on the long straight past the wells a lorry had swung wide across the centre line and then, for no reason anyone could name, snapped back into its lane. Hessa nodded as if this were ordinary. Samira looked at the eye on the card, dry now, and found it was still watching the door.
