Tribal sea turtle design
Black and grey · Flash
A sea turtle drawn in a bold, symmetrical tribal style, shown from above with a rounded head and four spiral flippers. The shell is filled with flowing curved bands, teardrop and diamond shapes, and the outline is built from thick, solid lines. The design is a single flat grey tone on a plain white background, with no body or skin visible.

The year the lifeboat slipped its mooring in January, my father said the sea had gone looking for something it had lost, and it had taken the turtle with it. Nobody in Porthgarrow believed him. We had never seen a turtle in our bay, only gulls fighting over bait tins and crabbers swearing at their pots.

Then Mrs Tonkin's grandson found it on the slipway at dawn, flipped on its back, its shell cut in long pale bands where the nets had caught it. He carried it up the steps in a fish crate lined with wet sacking. I was the one who knew knots, so I was the one who had to cut it free. The spirals on its flippers were so exact I thought someone had drawn them with a compass, and when I traced the curved bands across its shell with my thumb, they seemed to lead nowhere, round and round, the way the tide turns before it decides which way to go.
We kept it in the old lobster tank by the net loft for nine days. My father fed it mackerel he had no business giving away. On the tenth morning the spring tide came over the harbour wall higher than anyone remembered, and the turtle was gone, leaving a single diamond-shaped dent in the silt where it had rested. I stood there with the empty crate until the water drew back.
That evening I took a tin of hull paint, grey as slate, and drew a diamond on the loft wall above the tank. Nobody believes my father, and nobody believes me either, but the diamond is still there, and on the highest tides I swear the water sits in its shape a little longer than the rest.
