Hamsa hand with eye in dotwork design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of a hamsa hand with a large eye at its centre, surrounded by mandala-like patterns, scrolls and a small heart at the top. The linework is fine and the shading is built from stippled dots, with solid black areas framing the eye and the fingers. The design sits centred on a white sheet with a black pen placed at the top left.

The snow had buried the lower step by the time Mrs Ferris came down with the blue tin under her arm, and she was already complaining about the draught from the cellar hatch. Nobody had come up the pass in three days. The six of us left at the Coldharbour were the sort who stay put, so we sat by the grate and let the wind try the shutters.

The tin held her mother's keys, a bent lot of them, none of which fitted any door still standing in the valley. Mrs Ferris said the old woman had kept them for the locks of the houses that emptied when the mine closed and the families walked out. She tipped them onto the bar and turned one over with a fingernail. Its bow was pierced through the middle, and the hole had been punched with such care that I could still see the ring of the drill.

Dolly, the cook's boy, swore the eye painted on the tin lid was watching us. Mrs Ferris rapped the lid with her knuckles and told him an eye only watches what it expects to see, and he should go and see to the fire. That was the nearest anyone came to sleep that night. Near dawn the wind dropped, the snow-light came in grey across the floor, and I found the largest key lying on the flagstone by the door, though I was sure the tin had been shut.

The door opened outward onto a drift as high as my shoulder. Beyond it, under the crust, the track ran straight down into the valley, and there was a light in one window, a lamp someone had left burning for a long time.
