Hamsa hand with Ganesha design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A drawn design of a hamsa hand outline filled with a central Ganesha face wearing an ornate headdress, with mandala-style patterns in the fingers and palm. The linework is fine and stippled at the edges, with soft pencil shading on the face and headdress. The drawing is rendered in blue-grey tones on a pale background, centred in the frame.

Sit closer, you with the wet boots, the lamp has no more oil than my patience. You want the Lantern Road again? Very well, but you will hear it properly tonight, not shouted the way the boys shout it at the well.

In the kingdom of Parvani Tal, where the river Oss ran backwards every ninth spring, there was a toll-keeper named Mirel Dask who sat at the iron gate with a ledger and a cracked slate. Nobody passed without paying her a coin, a song or a secret. One autumn a stranger came up the road with no coin at all, only a drawing on pale paper: an open hand, and inside its palm the broad grey face of the elephant god who clears stones from roads before a traveller can stumble on them. The lines at the edges were fine as frost, and the fingers held little mandalas like folded lotus petals.
Mirel laughed and said the god could not pay the toll either. The stranger only shrugged and asked her to look at the eyes. So she took her pencil, the stub she used for tallies, and she shaded the lids as the stranger guided her hand. By dawn the gravel had rolled itself into a low wall beside the road, and the cart ruts had filled with clean water. The gate was still there, but it no longer shut. Its iron had worn into the shape of an open palm.
That is why the children press their hands to the bars. Mirel's slate is still in the gatehouse, and the last line on it says only: no coin, no song, no secret, pass.
