Hand-drawn floral design with fineliner

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A hand is inking a dense, symmetrical floral design on white paper with a black fineliner pen. The design combines flower heads, leaves, paisley swirls and dotted fills, all drawn in uniform black linework. Only black ink is used, and the compact cluster sits in open white space.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, you'll want the chair nearest the grate, it's warmer than the story. Mary Teasdale had a pen like the one in that picture, a thin black thing with a steel tip, and she used it on everything. Her husband Joe worked the low seam at Bell Pit for thirty-one years and came home every night with coal in the creases of his neck. After his tea she'd sit him at the table and draw on the backs of the wage slips, flowers mostly, crowded and fussy, every petal and leaf and little dotted fill.

The winter the seam flooded, nobody had work and the bairns were thin as lathes. Mary went up the tip behind the chapel with a jam jar and a paper twist of seed the vicar had given out. The spoil was black and sour and no use to anyone. But first she drew the flowers, a whole bouquet of them on a sheet of drawing card, and pinned it to the chapel door with a note saying what it would be when the spring came. Folk laughed at her. Then they came up the lane to look, and nobody laughed after that.

Here's the bit they still tell wrong. Come spring, the seed she'd pushed into the slag with her thumb did come up, not roses, not anything proper, but a clump of wild stuff with leaves cut like paisley and heads that opened ink-black at dusk and pale at dawn. Joe said it was the drawing that did it. Mary said it was the patience. I reckon it was both, and the rest of us only had to climb up and pick the flowers.
