Hand-drawn Ph 1:6 lettering with a cross

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of lettering reading a semicolon-like mark, Ph, 1:6 and a tall cross, enclosed in a hand-drawn oval outline. The letters use uniform, slightly wobbly strokes with no shading, and a similar line of the same text appears cropped at the top of the frame. The design sits centred on blue-lined notebook paper in a flat, close-up composition.

Miss Dorothy Pruett had marked the word "semicolon" wrong on the board twice before lunch, and by the afternoon bell she had decided the mark itself was the problem. It was a full stop that could not commit. You could stop there, or you could go on, and the choice was left to whoever was reading. "Like a man at a bus stop," she told the class, and Thomas Oddie laughed so hard he had to be sent to the corridor.

When the others had gone she stayed at her desk with the blue-lined pad, copying out the verse her mother had pinned above the kitchen sink for thirty years. Philippians, first chapter, sixth verse. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it. She had never liked the verse much. It sounded like a promise from someone who had never had to keep a class of forty in order on a wet Thursday. Still, she drew the oval round it, the way she circled the answers she wanted the children to look at again, and she gave the cross a long upright stroke to hold the whole thing down.

The next morning Thomas came in early with his cap in both hands and asked whether the stop could go on being a stop, or whether it had to be finished. She looked at him over her glasses for a long moment. "Sit down, Thomas," she said, "and go on with your sum." He did, and she left the mark on the board all day, a small black comma-shaped pause with a dot beneath it, waiting for the bell.
