Looped triangle design with swirls in black ink

Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn ink design shows a triangle formed from bold strokes, with an infinity-style loop across its base, a looped shape at the top and a heart-like outline around it. Small curled spirals sit inside and below the triangle. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the image is entirely black ink on white paper.

The lodger in number four had drawn the same mark on the steamed bathroom mirror every morning for a week, and Edith Lusk wiped it away with the flat of her hand before the breakfast bell. Three loops and a heart, the way a child draws a kite. She never asked him about it. Boarding houses at Scarrow Bay ran on things left unasked, like the damp in the back stairwell and the gull that nested in the gutter over the scullery.

He came in October with a cardboard tube under one arm and sea-coal dust in the creases of his cuffs. He paid a month in advance, in coins he counted twice, and asked only for the window to stay shut. On the Tuesday she found the mark again, but this time the lowest loop had swollen into a curl, like a wave folding back on itself. It had not been drawn with a finger. The glass had simply kept what he breathed onto it.

That evening she opened the hall-table drawer where her mother had kept the old ledgers. Tucked into 1911 was a bill with the same triangle pencilled on its back, a man who had left owing three weeks and a promise to write. Her mother had marked him with a line through the infinity bar and nothing else. Edith held the paper to the lamp and thought that some debts never closed, they only looped back round to the start.

In the morning she took his tea up herself. She set it down, looked at the mirror, and said he could stay on through the winter if he liked. He nodded, turned the tube over in his hands, and said nothing. When she went down, she left the lowest curl where it was, and let the steam gather round it until the glass was clouded white.
