The wolf was sitting on Ada Penrose's gatepost when she came out with the milk pail, its breath smoking in the lamplight, looking at her as if she owed it money.

She had lived alone since the quarry shut. The sheep had gone to pay the rates, and the only thing she kept of her father's was a hoop of willow wrapped in sinew, strung with a fringe of black crow feathers and hung above the door. "Keep what catches the bad dreams," he used to say, "and let the good ones through." She had never believed a word of it until the wolf started coming.

On the fourth night she took the hoop down and carried it out to the gate. The wolf rose without hurry and walked up the fell path, and she followed with the lantern swinging, past the old quarry where the rails still ran into the dark, until the sky went grey over the moor. There it sat beside a standing stone with a hollow worn in its top, the size of a bowl. Inside lay a small iron key and a folded letter in her father's hand, dated the winter before he died.

She read it standing, the wind pulling at the feathers in her fist. It said only: Ask the wolf which door it guards. When she looked up, the wolf was gone, and the first lark was climbing over the quarry. Ada laughed for the first time in a year, because she knew which door he meant, the one she had nailed shut at seventeen and never once looked at since.
