Great Wave tattoo in a circle on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows a stylised version of a large curling wave with spray-like crests, a small distant peak, and several small open circles around the edge. The wave is outlined in solid black linework, while the sky and background are built up with stippled dots that shade from dark to light. The tattoo is in black and grey on the outer forearm, set against a grey wooden plank background.

The pot has been boiling over since the second watch, and you are the only one awake to lift it off the hob. Gerda Lund pinned the print above the stove the week she signed on, a wave curling like a claw over three small boats, and nobody has ever asked her to take it down.

Tonight the swell is coming in from the west in long grey ridges, and the lamp swings on its chain, throwing circles of light across the bulkhead. Every bubble that rises in the stockpot seems to shine like a small moon for a second before it bursts. You count them the way Gerda taught you, one for each lash of spray that clears the porthole, and by the time the potatoes are soft you have lost count somewhere past forty.
Before dawn the cloud tears open and there is a peak on the horizon, pale as a tooth, exactly where the print says it should be. Gerda is already on deck with the flask. She says nothing about the picture, only that the wave in it never once broke over the mountain, and that you should eat something before the next squall.
You carry the bowl up the ladder with both hands. Behind you the stockpot settles, and one last bubble climbs slowly to the surface and fails to break.
