Hand holding a flower sprig on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is an outline drawing of an open hand, palm facing inwards, holding a thin stem with small five-petalled flowers and loose buds at the top. The linework is a single even black line with no shading, and the flowers are simply drawn with small petal outlines. The tattoo sits on the side of a bare torso, lit by strong sunlight against a dark background.

Dear Ines, the big top came down on Tuesday in the rain, and nobody cried except the elephant, who had been told nothing and simply stood with her trunk raised as the poles went over. Mr Halloran paid us out in brown envelopes behind the horsebox. Mine had eleven pounds in it and a note that said thank you for your service, which I have decided to frame.

I am writing from the lodgings in Pontypridd because I need to tell someone about the sprig of blossom. Last spring, when the tent was still dry and the Lovells were still speaking, a boy from the town came to the ring carrying a branch he had snapped from the churchyard tree. He was too shy to give it to the trapeze girl he had come to see, so he pressed it into my hand instead, and I held it up, open-palmed, like a waiter with a tray while he found his nerve. My hand, Ines. Not the girl on the wire. It was the strangest thing: he kept looking at the flowers and I kept looking at my fingers.
The sprig is in a jam jar on my windowsill now. Two petals have gone brown at the edges, and one bud has opened that I did not expect. Write back and tell me what you think the boy wanted. I think he wanted the hand to hold still long enough to be remembered, which is what letters are for.
Your loving sister, Maud.
