The elephants came down from the hills in the dry month, when the river at Haddow Ford had shrunk to a thread between the stones. Old Mabry Lusk, who kept the ferry and the one good well, saw them first from her doorstep. A big cow went ahead, with her trunk curled low, and behind her came two calves, one a little less tall than the other, all of them walking so close their sides nearly touched.

Nobody in the village had seen an elephant in living memory, but Mabry knew the look of a family on the road. She put a bucket of water at the edge of the lane and went back indoors without watching them drink. When she looked again the cow had lifted her head and was facing the forest, as if counting something that was not there.

The smallest calf stopped to pull a thistle from the verge and was left behind for a moment. The middle one turned back for it, then the cow turned, and the three of them stood in a row at the edge of the lane until the little one had finished eating. Then they went on together into the trees, each one a step behind the last, and Mabry noticed that the youngest kept touching the middle one's back with its trunk as it walked, the way you might keep a hand on a rail in the dark.

In the morning the bucket was empty and the ferry rope was wet where someone had leaned on it. Mabry never told anyone which way they had gone, only that the river had risen a finger's width overnight, and that it was enough.
