Hand-lettered I'll Be there design on paper
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink hand-lettered design on white paper reads I'll Be there in large brush-style script, with smaller capitals curved around it in a circle. A black Staedtler pigment liner pen lies across the top of the sheet, and faint lettering is visible at the edge of the page. The design is drawn in solid black with no shading or colour.

Dear Nell, the printers sent the wedding cards back with the wrong ink again, so I spent all of Tuesday redoing the sheet by hand and ended up at the kitchen table at two in the morning with a fine liner and a headache. Mr Halloran says a letterer is only paid for the work he doesn't have to do twice, and he is right, though it doesn't help my wrist.

The order was for a Mrs Pryce from Margate, who came in on Monday with a photograph of a lad in a navy jersey, squinting at the camera. She wanted words on the back for him to carry aboard the Eliza Jane. She was particular. The big line had to be I'll Be there in a brush script that looked like it had been thrown down in one go, and the smaller capitals had to run round it in a circle, WHATEVER TOMORROW BRINGS, WITH OPEN ARMS AND OPEN EYES, so that when he turned the card over at sea it would still be looking at him from every side. I told her the circle would take a day to get even. She said he would have a day's worth of waiting to do anyway.
She came back this morning. The card is soft as cloth now, folded in quarters and gone the colour of weak tea, and she wants another made to the same measure because the first one went overboard off the Goodwins, or so the letter from the mate said. She laid it on the counter very carefully and smoothed the corner flat with her thumb. The ink on the capitals had lifted only a little at the bends, which I had not expected, and I told her so. She said that was the sea doing its share.
I have kept the pen aside for the new one. It is the same Staedtler I was using on the wedding cards, black and dependable, and I have made the capitals a shade lighter this time so they curl like the tide coming in.
