The slate by the galley door had three lines on it, and Mrs Gorst chalked them afresh every Monday because the sea rubbed them off by Wednesday. Nobody aboard the coaster Marigold could read them without moving their lips, so the new hands always asked what they said, and she always told them the same thing. Love all, she would say, wiping her fingers on her apron. Trust a few. Do wrong to none. Then she would hand them a ladle and ask whether they had been raised by wolves.

That spring a boy called Tobias Reed came aboard at Hull with a cap too big for him and a habit of pocketing sugar lumps. By the third week the stores were short a tin of ship's biscuit, the mate was red in the face about it, and the cabin boy swore he had seen the cat wearing a waistcoat. Mrs Gorst said nothing at supper. She only set an extra bowl at the end of the table, put a sugar lump beside it, and looked at no one in particular while the tea went cold.

Tobias did not come. When the watch changed the bowl was still there, the lump was gone, and the tin was not.

On Monday she chalked the slate again. Under the three lines she added a fourth, smaller, and when the crew came in for their tea they stopped and read it aloud, one after another, until the last of them said it slowly. Tobias Reed, it said. You may come to supper. The lump is yours either way.
