Looped script quote lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A handwritten script design set across five centred lines of text, reading All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be. The letterforms use fine, looping calligraphic strokes with decorative swashes and a small ornament below the final line. The design is drawn in black ink on lined notebook paper, with no shading or colour.

I have pinned your sister's sampler above the range where the steam can't reach it. Every stitch is perfect and I can't look at it long.

You always said that a thing is only as large as the eye that holds it. I thought it was the sort of thing a clever girl says to be contrary. Yesterday I walked to the top field, where the hawthorn has come out, and I sat with the sheep and tried it. I looked until the white blossom filled everything, and for a while it was true, the field was the whole of the world and the world was small and sweet and asked nothing of me.
Then the bell went for the funeral and I came back down, and the lane had its ruts and the church had its draught, and I understood that what you touch and what you see is all any of us gets, and that you had chosen the smaller touch and the smaller sight so you would not have to bear the larger one. I am not angry. I only wish you had written me the reason in your own hand instead of leaving me your favourite pen.
Come home when you can, or don't, but send word. Yours always, Martha.
