Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a hand holding an embellished clutch decorated with silver coins, beads, woven trims and fringed tassels. The forearm above the wrist carries a black ink floral tattoo, partly hidden by stacked silver bangles. A turquoise stone ring and a cuff-style bracelet sit on the hand, against a blue denim background.

The officer at Ruzhev Gate wanted to know what the coins were worth, so I told him the truth, which was that they were worth nothing to anyone but my aunt. Forty-one of them, sewn on by hand the winter she left her village, each one dented a little differently from years in other people's pockets. He turned the clutch over under the sodium lamp and rubbed a turquoise stone with his thumb, while the chains along the bottom chimed like a small bell in the wind coming off the river.

My aunt cut the bag from a strip of red woven band that came off a loom two valleys over. At every border she crossed, she added something: a bead, a tassel, a coin from whichever currency had collapsed that year. She told me a bag like this could carry a family's whole argument about where it belonged, and that it was lighter than it looked. I believed her until the officer asked me to open it and I found I had packed it with bread, two letters and a photograph of a dog that died before I was born.
He did not ask about the letters. He read the name on the top envelope, looked at the coin nearest the clasp, and said his own grandmother had one exactly like it, from the same market in the same bad year. Then he stamped my papers and waved the lorry behind me through. I stood by the barrier with the clutch pressed against my ribs, feeling each coin through the lining, and counted them the way she taught me, from the clasp outward.
At the far gate the fringe snagged on the railing and a few inches of silver chain stayed tangled there, a small payment to a country I was only passing through. My aunt would have approved. I took the last coin I owned, a worn piece from the old currency, and sewed it on with the thread from my own sleeve before I stepped down into the other side.
