Nobody at the Halcyon Rooms settles a debt in cash after midnight, so Tomas Hale waited until I had the engine running in the car park. Then he leaned through my window with two bottles of vintage champagne under one arm and balanced a watch on each neck, the way you might hang hats on a hatstand.

"Pick one," he said. "The gold one is the debt. The steel one is the way out." I knew which was which without asking. The gold had been his father's, the watch Tomas wore to the card table the night he lost the lease on the glasshouse in Kent. The steel was new, bought with whatever he had won since. Neither of them had done a thing for the roses out there, which had been left to go black at the edges while the glass turned milky with frost.
I didn't pick either. I got out, took both bottles by their necks and walked them to the kerb where the rain ran toward the drain. Tomas laughed until he saw I meant it. Then I eased the first cork out with my thumbs and let it foam over the gutter, slow and gold, the same colour as the labels and the only bright thing on the street.
"Your mother's roses don't need a bet," I said. He stood under the lamp with his hands empty, and for the first time since I had known him, he looked at his bare wrist as if the time might still be there.
