Lettering on a forearm beside gold watches and cash
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two wrists and a hand resting on a stack of US banknotes. The forearm and hand carry black and grey script and block lettering, partly cut off by the frame, with a large outlined letter shape near the elbow. Two gold-toned wristwatches, one with a black dial and one with a white dial, sit on the wrists, and the warm, close framing puts the ink and the watches in focus.

The gold watch came across the counter still warm from a wrist, which is how I knew it had been worn all night. I weighed it, tested the crown, held it to the lamp the way my father taught me, and wrote the figure in the ledger before I looked up.

The man across from me kept a fistful of notes that he folded and unfolded, the paper gone soft as cloth. He wanted the sum in cash and he wanted it counted in front of him. So I counted it twice, fifty and fifty, then the stiff new ones that still smelled of the bank. My hands were steady, which surprised me. Behind him the door kept opening onto the wet street, and nobody who came in seemed to be in any hurry at all.
Writing tickets is the part of the job I've always liked. Block capitals, carbon copy, a number in the corner that matches the tag tied to the strap. I printed his name the way it appeared on his licence, and under REDEEM BY I wrote a date six months off, because that is the rule. Then I added the thing the rule does not ask for, a small line in the margin: KEEP WINDING.
When I locked up I opened the drawer to check the till, and the watch was still going, ticking against the tin among the other pledges, keeping time for nobody in particular until someone came back to claim it.
