Tattooed hand holding a rolled joint over banknotes
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A forearm and hand rest over a pile of scattered US $100 banknotes on a dark surface, with a rolled joint held between the fingers. The forearm carries a bold, traditional-style tattoo in red and black with heavy outlines, and dark block lettering runs across the back of the hand. The dim, low-contrast composition is centred on the hand and the banknotes, with colour limited to the red tattoo ink and the pale notes.

The stack came through the letterbox at twenty to eleven, held together by a rubber band that had given up somewhere on the stairs. Dora Fenwick found it on the mat when she came down to lock the bureau, forty-one hundred-dollar notes fanned across the lino like a bad hand of cards, the red 100s bright under the strip light. Nobody had asked to exchange them. Nobody had signed anything.

She counted them twice on the glass counter, one palm flat over the pile so nothing slid, the way her father had taught her to count eggs. Tomorrow's rate would make them worth a little over three thousand pounds, more than the bureau took in a fortnight, enough to make the shutter rattle for a week. Her hand rested on the pile a long time. Outside, a bus sighed at the stop and pulled away empty.
At half past seven the next morning she was still there, kettle cold, when a lad in a wet hoodie pushed the door open and asked, not quite meeting her eye, whether anyone had handed in some money. He described the notes exactly, down to the crease on the top one. She slid them across the counter and watched him count with his lips moving, then fold them into a jacket pocket that bulged like a fist. He thanked her and left. Dora stood a while, then noticed a single red 100 still lying under the edge of the counter, which she had not counted. She put it in the till drawer and wrote nothing down.
