Rose tattoo on upper arm in a car
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits in a car with one hand on the steering wheel, showing green nails and a shaded black and grey rose tattoo on the upper arm at the right edge of the frame. The rose has solid black linework with grey shading and is partly cropped by the frame. The image is dark and warm in tone, with the wheel, ripped black tights, sneakers and a tan jacket filling the composition.

Dessie drew the rose on my upper arm the third night past the Horn, with the galley lamp swinging on its hook and the Maria Teresa rolling hard enough to slop the tea across the table. He had no proper machine, only a motor salvaged from the winch and a needle bound to a bent spoon handle, and he kept a jam jar of black ink wedged between his knees.

He shaded it grey with a wash of soot and dishwater, working the petals in thin layers so the flower looked lit from one side, the way the sun comes low over the water at four bells. Captain Oyelaran said a man who marks himself with a flower ought to have a reason, and I told him the reason was my mother, who grew roses in a yard in Grimsby on ground that never stopped being sand.
We made Valparaíso in March with the skin still tender at the edges. The ship's doctor, who had no love for amateur work, cleaned it with rum and told me it would heal crooked. It healed straight. Dessie went over the side off the Falklands in a squall the following winter, and nobody ever found him, but the ink held.
Every Sunday since, I rinse the rose under a cold tap and watch the grey settle back into the black, and I think of him bent over my arm in that lurching galley, the lamp throwing our two shadows up the bulkhead like men reaching for the same flower.
