Hand with lily of the valley on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A pale hand with a gold ring on one finger emerges from green leaves and holds a sprig of lily of the valley, with grey-shaded bell-shaped flowers curving up and around it. The hand is filled with soft red and pink tones and bold black outlines define the shapes, while the leaves are solid green. The design sits diagonally across the skin with a cropped tattoo visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The heralds sent to Hollin Vale before the thaw came back with mud to the knee and nothing to show for it but a story about a hand in the reeds. You are the fourth, and you have been told not to look at the water. You look anyway. The bells of the lily of the valley shiver along the bank, pale as teeth, and they ring faintly when the wind turns, though there is no wind.

Your guide is a clerk named Osric Thane, who keeps his inkpot inside his coat and says the marsh remembers every promise made beside it. He stops at a willow stump and points. Through the green blades a hand rises out of the peat, slender and warm-coloured as a new loaf, and on its third finger sits a gold band with a single clear stone. It holds one sprig of lily between its fingers and offers it up, as though to a guest who has come late to a wedding.

"Take it," Osric says, "and the marsh lets you go home. Leave it, and it keeps the ring until someone comes to claim the bride."

You kneel in the cold. The stalk is light and the bells are cool against your palm. You understand then why the heralds came back silent: the ring was never meant for the hand, and the hand was never meant to let go of it. You take the sprig. Osric is already walking back toward the causeway, and he does not turn round. That night, in the inn at Mire's End, you wake with the lily's sweet cold scent on your skin and find a gold band sitting on your finger, a little too loose, as though someone has measured you from a distance and got it nearly right.
