Magenta poppies across shoulder and upper arm

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

Two large magenta poppies are tattooed across the shoulder and upper arm, with one bloom in full view and a second partly visible at the lower left. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and highlights, while loose black lines and washes of pink and blue-grey spread around the flowers. The composition runs diagonally across the arm, with the dark background emphasising the bright ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mae Ockenden had been grinding cochineal in the back room of the Hallam Street print works since March, and the foreman still wouldn't let her near the good glass muller. The proof sheets for the seed merchant's catalogue hung drying along the racks, and every poppy on them came out the colour of a bruise.

The merchant wanted scarlet, the clean red of the field flowers his grandfather had sold by the sack. Mae wanted the colour that happens when a petal is held up to a window and the light comes through it, that deep plum-pink that is nearly violet at the heart. She mixed it with lake, a drop of gum arabic and a pinch of chalk, then laid it on wet so the edges bled into the grey wash behind, like rain coming up the valley from the Severn.

On the last night she pinned the worst of the sheets above the stove and went home without cleaning her brushes. In the morning Mr Pryce had taken a pencil to the margin of the top sheet. He had written KEEP THE BLEED in careful capitals, and beneath it, smaller, Ask her what she used.

She found the sheet still warm when she came in at seven, the ink on the flowers not yet dry, and she stood there a long while with her coat still buttoned, watching the colour settle into the paper.
