Lotus and looping line on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo shows a lotus flower with layered outlined petals at the lower end of a thin line that loops into a series of knotted curves and ends in a small dot near the top. The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, and the design is shown in greyscale. The tattoo sits diagonally across the forearm against a plain, softly lit background.

The sounding line had been knotted every arm's length, and Ruth counted the knots again with cold fingers while the pond lapped at the glasshouse wall. Forty-one. Her grandfather had tied them himself in 1961, and the last knot sat just above the lead weight that had gone down into the silt of the old lily pool at Hallam Court.

The estate was being sold for flats. The solicitor's letter lay under the teapot in the potting shed, and the men with the digger were coming on Monday to fill the pond. Ruth had no say in it. What she had was a jam jar of seeds, labelled in her grandfather's careful capitals: LOTUS, KEW, 1958. He had once promised to put one back where it came from.
On Sunday evening she waded in to her knees, the water as cold as a bell jar, and let the weight drop until it stopped on something soft. She wound the line up hand over hand, past forty knots, and pressed a single seed into the mud where the lead had rested. Then she tied a bead of blue glass to the top of the cord, so she would know where to dig.
On Monday the digger went round the pond and left one corner untouched. By August a pale leaf lifted above the water beside the blue bead, and Ruth stood on the path with the empty jar in her hands and the coiled line at her feet.
