Hands with finger lettering and geometric knuckle tattoos
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Clasped hands rest on a wooden ledge, with a dark sleeve visible behind them. Single letters and small symbols, including triangles and circles, are tattooed across the fingers, while interlocking geometric shapes and a web-like pattern cover the knuckles and backs of the hands. The ink is in black and grey, with fine outlines and solid fills, and the soft lighting keeps the focus on the hands.

The clockmaker in Market Lacey kept his hands flat on the counter whenever a customer came in, so the letters on his fingers faced the door. Left hand, N O T. Right hand, Y E T. Nobody in the town asked what they meant, because everybody already had an opinion about Walter Pryce and few wanted to hear his.

I came to him at fourteen with a grandfather clock that had stopped the week my mother left. He wiped the brass with a cloth folded into a triangle, and I watched the squares and circles on his knuckles shift as he worked the escapement, neat as the gears he taught me to name. A web ran from the back of his hand up under his cuff. When I asked if a spider had done it, he said a spider was only a patient fool, and he had always admired fools who never gave up on a thing.
The clock came back in the autumn of 1957 with the pendulum swinging so slowly it looked like it was thinking. Walter would not take my money. He asked instead that I wind it every Sunday and tell him, when I next came in, whether the house had kept time without me.
I still do it. That clock has run for nearly seventy years and I have never once let the key go unwound. On Sundays the tick fills the front room, and I sit beside it with my hands folded the way Walter folded his, reading the letters on my own fingers as though they were an answer I had not yet been asked for.
