Hands with lotus and botanical designs

Botanical · Hand · Mixed · Flash

Two illustrated hands sit on cream cards, each showing tattoo designs: a lotus with a crescent moon on the left hand, and a diamond eye with leaves and stems on the right. Bold black outlines and dotted detailing sit over a soft peach and rose wash for the skin tones. Patterned bands wrap the wrists, and the cards are photographed from above on a dark surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had been sorting spoil on the surface floor for eleven weeks before the foreman let her near the wash tables. The water ran grey off the ore, and the women talked over it about the price of coal and whose husband had been seen at the Miners' Arms. Ada kept her hands moving and her eyes on the sieve, shaking it like a bird caught in a net.

It was Mrs Trevena who noticed the stone, though she only mentioned it when Ada brought her tea. Among the quartz and mica lay a clear piece no bigger than a barley grain, cut with a flat face like an eye that had gone to sleep. Ada held it to the lamp and found a thin crescent scratched on its underside, the same shape her grandmother had pressed into the lid of every tin she owned.

Nobody in Wheal Sallow said the word diamond aloud. Men who said it lost their shares and sometimes their lodgings. Ada wrapped the stone in a handkerchief and carried it up the hill at dusk, past the chapel where the pew ends were carved with lilies, and past the stamp mill that had fallen silent the winter the company went under.

She did not sell it. She climbed into the old engine house, where the morning sun came through a broken pane and lay in a long bar across the floor. She set the stone on the sill and sat down beside it with her hands folded in her lap, the way her grandmother used to sit when she wanted the world to hold still for a minute. The crescent caught the light and threw a small moon across the whitewash, and Ada watched it move until the sun was gone.
