On the far side of the white line, behind the steel rail at waist height, Tomas was waiting with his hand already raised. He had been there since midnight, he said later, though nobody believed him. The rule was one touch per crossing, no more, and nobody could tell us where the rule came from. So when my turn came I didn't go straight to the booth. I went to the rail and laid my palm against the cold metal, and his hand came over the top of it and folded around mine, the way it did when we were children crossing the frozen pond on our bellies.

The officer in the booth watched the clock, then the sun, which had come through the windscreen low and red. "Papers," she said, not unkindly. I gave them to her. Behind me Dilys shouted something about the thermos, and the officer almost smiled, stamped the page twice and slid it back under the glass.

When I looked over my shoulder from the far side, the sun was sitting on the hill like a coin pressed into wet clay, and two hands were still up in the air where I had left them, one reaching across, one open and waiting, neither quite ready to let go.
