Black and grey rose on the back of a hand
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose fills the back of the hand, drawn with bold black outlines and soft grey shading that gives the petals depth. Part of a second tattoo, a clock face with numerals, is visible on the wrist and forearm, and the fingers wear several silver rings with dark matte nails. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the ink, with the hand angled diagonally across the frame.

The rose you asked about is still in the greenhouse, third bed from the pump. Ada says it bloomed black at the edges because the lamp schedule is wrong, but I think it's just stubborn. Everything grown out here is stubborn. Dad's pocket watch, the one with the cracked crystal, now keeps the hydroponic timers, and every hour it chimes a tune nobody remembers writing.
Before you ask: no, the Council hasn't moved the clock. They say the station runs on whatever time the sun keeps, and the sun has been on holiday since the spring shift. So we keep our own hours. You'd like it here, if you came back. At ten past eleven the rings turn and the light comes through the window in pale grey stripes, like shading on a drawing, and the rose throws a shadow across the floor that nobody has ever bothered to sweep.
Come home before the next docking window. I'll keep the kettle warm and the back door unlocked. Bring the seed packet from Halden, and don't let them tell you the garden is dead.
Love, Nell
