Handshake heart on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red heart sits at the centre of the design with two clasped hands across it, framed by a yellow flower above and green leaves at the sides. A small grey flower with a red centre sits below the hands, and the heart and hands are outlined in bold black linework. Solid, saturated colour is used throughout, with soft shading on the heart and cuffs, and the design is centred on the skin with the cropped photo showing a hairy forearm.

I was at the grate with the ash shovel, and I stood up holding it like a club, though I doubt I'd have used it.

They had been quarrelling since October over a bay gelding that had been sold to each of them in turn, once by a horse dealer in Kendal and once by a drover who owned nothing at all. My mother kept the ledger on the windowsill and told them the snow would settle what the horse was worth. Neither man listened. By supper they sat at the same long table, drinking my father's barley wine out of the same chipped jug, and the fire spat between them as if it had opinions.
At midnight the wind dropped, and I went out to the stable with a candle and found them both there, crouched either side of the gelding's near fore. Ansel had packed a poultice of comfrey and linseed. Dafydd had been up since dusk with a hot cloth, changing it every hour. Neither had mentioned it to the other, and neither would meet my eye when I held up the light.
In the morning the pass was white and glaring. Ansel and Dafydd shook hands over the bar, both cuffs pulled back for the sake of it. My mother opened the ledger, wrote one line in her slanting hand, and blotted it: Bay gelding, not sold, shared.
