Heart padlock and key on the top of a foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A red heart-shaped padlock with a dark keyhole and ornate gold scrollwork sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by purple ribbons. An ornate gold key with a clover-shaped bow runs diagonally beneath it. Bold dark outlines, dotted borders and rich shading give the piece a dimensional look, shown in two side-by-side photos of the same foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the big top came down in Ledbury, the Wonder had sold its elephant, its painted horses and most of its ribbons, but Old Parrish would not sell the strongbox. It was heart-shaped and red as a cough drop, with a keyhole the colour of cold tea and gold scrollwork that the travelling men said had once hung over a fairground queen's door. Nobody had seen it opened. Nobody had the key, or so Parrish said, until the night the ringmaster's granddaughter came to him with it on a string.

The key was small and gold, with a bow shaped like a clover leaf, and it had been in her coat since she was six, though she could not say who gave it to her. Parrish turned it over under the lamp. 'Your mother's,' he said. 'Or her mother's. The lock never kept anyone out, Nell. It only kept people from asking.' She asked anyway, and he told her what the Wonder had been before the trains and the cinemas and the new rides took the crowds: a company of people who had promised each other the same thing every night, that the show would go on.

The box held no jewels. Inside, folded in tissue, were the ribbons from every wagon, a programme from 1911 with her great-grandmother's name on the bill, and a note in pencil: Open this only when there is no one left to sell it to. Nell sat with the programme on her knee until the lamp ran low. Then she walked out to the field where the tent poles lay stacked like bones, tied a purple ribbon to the nearest one, and went back to bed with the key still in her coat.
