A small tattoo of the words "you are art." in a thin, loose, handwritten script runs across the inner forearm towards the wrist. The lettering is in black ink with slightly uneven strokes and a full stop at the end, and the skin around it looks lightly pink. The plain background of a grey sleeve and khaki fabric keeps the focus on the text.

He came out from the back with two teas in chipped mugs and a card folded into quarters. "Not the sign," he said, nodding at her pot of size. "This. My granddaughter reads everything I leave on the table, then turns it over to see if I've written on the back." He opened the card. Inside, in careful biro, were four words and no stop at the end. He wanted her to do them by hand, in her own letters, not his.
She worked on the back step under the security light with a fine liner and a pencil ghost first, then let the ink go loose. The y dipped, the a leaned as if it had somewhere else to be, and the t kept the wobble of a hand that had already been up a ladder for hours. She looked at it for a long time before adding the full stop, pressing it hard so it would not fade.
In the morning he sent her a photo of the card propped against the till, a girl's finger hooked under the corner, the stop caught in the light.
