Semicolon and quote on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A large black semicolon sits above the phrase My story isn't over, written in a flowing script that runs across the ankle. The lettering and semicolon are done in clean black linework with solid fill on the dot and comma, and the skin around them is plain. The photo is taken close up on a light skin tone, with a red shoe strap and a dark leather surface visible at the edges.

The oven was already warm when Agnes came down the back stairs, and the flour sack had split on the sill where the mice had got into it overnight. She gathered the spill into her palm and tipped it back, saying nothing to the cat, who watched her with the flat patience of a creature that had seen worse. Beyond the shutters the marsh was still the colour of wet slate. Her father had died in the winter and left her the bakehouse, the long peel, and a ledger of unfinished orders in his square hand.

The last entry read only: Take the dark loaf to Hanne at the mill house. It waits on the dawn. She had puzzled over it for a month. Then, drawing the first batch from the oven, she found the loaf he always baked last had a small mark pressed into its crust, a dot above a curled stroke, made by the iron stamp he kept on its hook. He used to say a stop ends a thing, but a pause only holds its breath, and the sentence goes on after it. Agnes had never understood what he meant.
She carried the loaf up the hill as the sky went from slate to pearl. Hanne had died the summer before, and her house stood shuttered, but the door was unlatched and the table inside was laid for two. Agnes set the bread on the cloth and sat across from the empty chair. The room smelled of cold ash and rosemary.
When the sun cleared the reeds, Agnes broke the loaf and found the crumb soft and sweet at the centre, with a second dark mark hidden where the knife went in. She understood then that the ledger had been an instruction, not a debt. She stood, took the iron stamp from its hook, and went down to start the next batch.
