Handwritten quote along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows three lines of black handwritten script tattooed on the side of the torso, reading living is easy with eyes closed. The lettering has a loose, slightly uneven hand with a consistent dark ink and crisp edges. The striped pink and white top is pulled up above the tattoo, and a bathroom tub and tiled wall sit in the background.

Sam, you fret over the tide tables as if they owe you money. Living is easy with eyes closed. Come home before the lamps are lit. D.
Her apprentice, Cora, leaned over her shoulder and asked whether they should cut the leaf out. A dealer in Ely had written asking for anything pre-1880 with marginalia, and this was marginalia of a kind. Winifred said nothing for a while. She was thinking of her own father, who had kept every one of her mother's notes in a biscuit tin and taken them out only when it rained.
In the end she left the leaf where it was. She cut new boards, sewed the signatures onto fresh linen tapes, and glued the old flyleaf down again so that the note faced the inside of the cover. Anyone who bought the almanac would read the weather and the saints' days. Nobody would see the line unless they lifted the board and looked, which was, Winifred supposed, the only way anything in a book was ever really found.
