Black and white photo of a fine line script tattoo reading with every mistake we must surely be learning, across the ribs of a person wearing a leopard print top.

Script quote across the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a person's side and ribs, with a leopard print top pulled up above the tattoo. The tattoo is a thin, dark script quote set across three lines reading with every mistake we must surely be learning. The black and white image is softly lit against a plain wall and a window frame, with the text sitting clearly in the centre of the frame.

Dear Marguerite, the post from the coast came in on Tuesday and I have read your letter four times standing at the sink, which is where I do my serious reading now that the kettle has gone. You will want to know the boat is not lost. Tom Hebble swears the mast was only cracked, and he has been out in the bay every morning since with a tin of pitch and a face like a wet slate. The new sail went up on Thursday. It is patched in three colours because Mrs Achterberg would not let him take the good cloth.

I went up to the lighthouse on Saturday with the lamp oil, as you asked me to, and I found the old logbook under the loose board where you said it would be. Most of the entries are weather. Wind backing south-west, glass falling, one cow on the rocks. Then in your father's hand, on the page for the winter he lost the Sparrow, there is a line I had not expected: with every mistake we must surely be learning. He has crossed out surely and written certainly above it, then crossed that out too, as if he could not decide how sure he wanted to be.

I have copied it onto the back of the tide tables and pinned it by the door. Mrs Achterberg says it is the kind of thing men write when they have stopped being sorry and started being stubborn, but I think it was meant kindly. Come home at the spring tide, Marguerite. The lamp is trimmed and the kettle is on, and there is room on the bench for both of us to read.
