Quote tattoo on the side of the thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a black text tattoo on the outer side of a thigh, below the edge of a dark garment and a leopard print waistband. The words I carry your heart with me, followed by a line in brackets reading I carry it in my heart, are set in a serif typeface, with the word heart emphasised in a larger cursive script on each line. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the composition is a close, angled view with a hand and ring visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has closed the pass since noon, and the landlady of the Hollin Fold has put a second blanket on the bed in room four without being asked. You are the only guest left who isn't a shepherd or a surveyor, and you have been standing at the window of the back parlour for an hour, watching the lamp of the postal van blink and go out on the far side of the valley.

Your brother's letter is in your coat. He wrote it in pencil on the back of a seed catalogue, which is the sort of thing he does, and it says only that the farm is sold, the dog is with the Ashworths, and he is sorry you had to hear it from a solicitor. You read it twice by the fire. Then you read the line he underlined at the bottom, the one that says he has kept the old tin of buttons the two of you sorted as children, and that he will bring it when the roads are clear, because some things should not be posted.

Mrs Dunning comes in with a tray of mutton and two cups. She sets one down in front of the empty chair as if someone might yet arrive, and says the snow will hold until Thursday. You tell her about the tin. She nods like a woman who has buried a husband in February and knows exactly what a promise is worth in weather.

Next morning the sky is the colour of pewter and the road is a white ribbon with no end. At half past eight a figure comes up it on foot, slow and dark against the drifts, carrying something held flat against the chest with both arms. You go out without your coat. Nobody needs to tell you it is him.
